I began experimenting with Art as a means of self-expression in my early teens and continued through my training as an Art teacher.
Painting has always informed my own personal journey, providing me with a mirror to see feelings, reflections and understandings about myself and my world.
My career changed over the years from Art teaching into travel writing and photography but my habit of Art continued to walk alongside me. I began painting murals, usually large abstract or semi-representational, which often ended up in cafes or restaurants as backdrops. After some years I moved to a smaller format, using acrylics, often painting themes or ideas, which sometimes ended up on book covers.
In 2010 I went back to study a Masters in Art and Design, at the College of Fine Art at the University of NSW in Sydney, Australia, which I completed in 2014.
Through this process I came to understand that years of travel had inspired my love of drawing and painting buildings, architectural sketching and textile art.
One of my favourite ways to teach Art skills is to connect the experience with travel. Travel opens us to “line, form, texture and tone”. It invites us into the world of colour and pattern.
Whether sketching or painting, we can use our travel destinations as inspiration and a way to develop how we see the world. It is from this rich platform that I now am enjoying sharing my Art skills.
